California restaurant owners are furious about a new law banning eateries from charging customers so-called 'junk fees.'Senate Bill 478, which was signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom last year, will prohibit most businesses in the Golden State from charging hidden fees beginning on July 1.
'We are considering all available options to block implementation of SB 478 in the manner suggested by the AG's office.'Newsweek reached out for comment to the offices of Bonta and Newsom via email on Friday.Restaurant owners and industry groups were particularly perturbed in San Francisco, where many restaurants bill customers for a 5 to 6 percent surcharge to comply with the city's 'health care security' ordinance.
