Open Hearth restaurant in Taylor, South Carolina, has drafted in blow-up dolls to fill its empty tables while social distancing measures remain in place

A restaurant filled some of its seats with sinister rubber mannequins in an attempt to boost its atmosphere while social distancing measures are in place. Open Hearth in Taylor, South Carolina, placed the smartly-dressed dummies in booths to try and make it feel less empty after re-opening for the first time on Tuesday.

Owner Paula Starr Melehes explained: ‘Instead of using scary, yellow tape or roping off the empty tables, I thought, “We’re going to make this restaurant look full.”‘ Open Heart and other restaurants in the state must keep groups of diners at least six feet apart to try and stop the spread of Covid-19, with many eateries forced to run at half-capacity to comply with those measures.

Enterprising Melehes ordered the blow-up dolls from Amazon and insisted they are the ‘G-rated kind’, rather than the more adult alternatives often popular with bachelorette parties. She and husband Jimmy deep-cleaned the restaurant before it opened, with all staff also wearing masks. Open Heart also now uses disposable menus, with customers encouraged to use hand sanitizer dotted throughout its dining room.
