In the song “I Say A Little Prayer,” Aretha Franklin contemplates the love she is feeling for someone; she’s just woken up, fresh-faced, as she is combing her hair and “wondering what dress to wear.

Do you take this psychological and sociological approach to costume design with all the productions you work on? Aretha grew up under her father, who was a really prominent preacher and civil rights figure, and I think there was a lot of tension around ideas of morality, modesty, and sexuality. There was an attempt early on to make her proper and present her as a squeaky clean crooner, perhaps due to pressure from her family or values she had internalized. But it betrayed this innate sense of soul and funk. In turn, that created a tension between what she wore and how she wore it.
