PALMER, Alaska - The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly passed a resolution this week that would display U.S. historical documents and the Ten Commandments inside the lobby of the Dorothy Swanda Jones Building, the main borough building in Downtown Palmer., and includes an amendment directing the borough manager to evaluate the possibility of displaying the same documents inside borough public libraries.
Several residents spoke in opposition during the public comment period, arguing it informally establishes religion inside local government and excludes individuals with non-Christian belief systems.would direct the borough manager to display the U.S. Constitution, Alaska Constitution, the Mayflower Compact, the Magna Carta, and the Ten Commandments.
District 2 representative Stephanie Nowers made a motion to cap the expense at $750, but withdrew the motion after District 6 representative Dimitri Fonov motioned to instead solicit donations from residents for the project.
