The community felt abandoned as residents grappled with a number of socioeconomic issues such as unemployment and crime. In addition, they have had to deal with poor service delivery. Botshabelo is arguably the second-biggest township in the country, after Soweto in Gauteng, but it only has three police stations, which are not enough to win the war against crime in the area.
The ministers threw around big budgets that they said had been allocated to improve services, but did not give any clear timelines to indicate when these various projects would be completed.Mbalula told the residents that R1.4 billion had been allocated to improve the road infrastructure and fix the potholes in the Free State, while Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi said R30 million had been prioritised to remove asbestos roofs in the province.
“I appointed district champions, who are made up of ministers, deputy ministers and provincial leaders. Our engagements with a number of role players have provided several solutions which we are going to act on,” the president said.
