Residents call for more encampment cleanup after homeless man's dog attacks woman

SAN ANTONIO - Elizabeth Daniel and her dog Torin were walking along the Leon Creek Greenway like they did every day. While on their usual path, Daniel and Torin passed by a homeless couple and two dogs. One was on a leash and under the control of the couple. The other wore a leash and harness, but no one was holding it.

They're both still recovering, but Daniel told us Friday that she doesn't know if she'll be able to return to those daily walks. "It hurts that nobody cares, and if they cared more, this wouldn't have even happened. Because this has been an issue for years now, this didn't happen overnight," Daniel said.

The Solid Waste Department says these were one-time cleanups, as opposed to recurring sites that need to be abated often.Parks must provide notice of homeless encampments to DHS for assessment and outreach. If our services are required for the clean-up effort, then we coordinate with DHS and SWMD on that larger effort. These encampments are transitory by nature. Members will often relocate after one camp has been abated and begin a new encampment elsewhere.

She says she wants the city to check on these trails more often, and she doesn't want the dog that attacked her to be released. The dog is still in ACS care after being in quarantine, and the department tells us it has been deemed dangerous.
