A woman was killed in a crash after running a red light on Mountain View Corridor in West Valley City. Yulissa Serrano, who lives near the intersection of 4100 South and Mountain View Corridor, said she hears racing cars and sirens all night.
She said that some people don't obey traffic rules there. "I think it's more the younger people that don't respect the lights and things like that," Serrano said. In the wake of the most recent fatal crash, 2News asked the Utah Department of Transportation how the intersection compares to others in terms of serious crashes and what they have done or are doing to improve safety there. "Well, statistically it's comparable," said John Gleason, public relations director for UDOT. "You hate talking about numbers when we're talking about lives. Any crash that happens, fatal crash that happens, is one too many." A woman was killed in a crash after running a red light on Mountain View Corridor in West Valley City. Since 2021, 4100 South has seen seven serious crashes — four of which were fatal. UDOT said this segment of Mountain View Corridor has only been open since around 2019. "Over the last several years that this intersection's been open, we have actually made quite a few safety adjustments," Gleason said, including installing an advanced warning system that tells drivers they're approaching a red light; a second stop light bulb to emphasize a red light; and adjustments to the signal timing. "When you get a red light, it'll take a couple seconds longer for the green light to turn.""More patrolling, more surveillance, I feel like, during the weekend," she said. Just down the road, 3500 South has also seen three fatal crashes in the last five years. 2News reached out to West Valley City to ask if they're seeing a trend in more crashes in intersections like these; what patrols look like there and if they're going to increase them; and if they're seeing increased ticketing for speeding or red-light running there. We did not hear back.
