The project included cutting-edge archaeological tools, including “underwater drones” that brought cameras to vessels that sank more than 80 years ago off the Aleutian island.

Dominic Bush, a PhD candidate and underwater archeologist from East Carolina University, looked at 4x5 negatives taken in 1943 during the WWII battle against the Japanese at Attu Island, which are part of the archives at the Anchorage Museum on Thursday, July 28, 2022.

“We were really just kinda exploring, in the truest sense of the word,” said Bush, a doctoral candidate at East Carolina University. The team found three ships on the seafloor, recording them with state-of-the-art equipment and marking the first time any of the vessels, two Japanese and one American, have been seen since sinking more than eight decades ago.

Dominic Bush takes notes in the back. “This isn’t just an American story, this isn’t just a Japanese story. It’s a shared story. We’re hoping that archaeology can heal some of those divides,” said Bush, who grew up in Hawaii and traveled to Alaska during summers to visit members of his mom’s family in Chenega in Prince William Sound.
