Scientists at Oregon Health and Science University have made a development that could lead to a greater understanding of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia: a new cause for the diseases that impact cognitive functioning.

The study, in which researchers studied post-mortem human brain tissue from dementia patients, was published inMicroglia deteriorates in the Alzheimer's and vascular dementia patient's white matter of the brain, scientists found.

However, researchers found that microglia are demolished while getting rid of myelin, which is heavily rich in iron. This sabotage happens through a form of cell death named ferroptosis.seems to play a role in advancing cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia, according to Back.

The new research offers a glimmer of hope for scientists, who hope to create improved technologies to slow the process of dementia. Iron toxicity in the brain is well known and typically from genetic dysfunction. This paper identifies potential iron toxicity from cell death and the debris that accumulates."

Researchers identify key steps to toxic protein accumulation in Alzheimer's and other diseasesResearchers identify key steps to toxic protein accumulation in Alzheimer's and other diseasesUnder normal circumstances, tau protein is part of the brain's infrastructure, important for stabilizing neurons into their proper shapes. But sometimes tau gets knotted up into tangles and turns toxic, injuring brain tissue and causing tauopathies, a group of brain diseases characterized by problems with learning, memory and movement. Alzheimer's disease is the most common tauopathy, but the group also includes Parkinson's disease, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and several rare genetic conditions.
