This system, called FireLoc, could detect fires igniting from up to 3,000 feet away and accurately map wildfires to within 180 feet of their origin.The wildfire that occurred in Lahaina, Hawaii, in 2023 tragically claimed over 100 lives and scorched 6,500 acres on Maui, demonstrating how rapidly wildfires can spread, rendering effective response measures almost unfeasible. This results in substantial loss of life and property.

The researchers’ paper is a proof of concept.
The system protects privacy by focusing on areas with little human activity. It mainly captures images of plants and wilderness. “This is also very overwhelming for fire departments, especially in rapidly spreading fires like the Camp Fire in Paradise,” said Fu. The Camp Fire, which happened in Northern California in 2018, killed 85 people.based on data from the 2019 Getty Fire, which burned 745 acres in Los Angeles. They created a 3D model of the terrain and simulated realistic wildfire scenarios. This helped them evaluate how well their system could locate wildfires and how it could be scaled up.
