When you don't feel cared for or liked, you feel lonely. New research suggests that loneliness can also lead you to underestimate the care and regard you receive from others.
Loneliness increases when people feel others do not like them.This misperception can create a vicious cycle.
This paper presented three studies that used similar methods. In each study, several hundred participants were enrolled in the study. In some studies, participants made judgments about a variety of different kinds of significant others and some studies focused on romantic partners. I will describe one study from this paper as an example, but the results from all studies supported the same overall conclusions.
The results were consistent with the idea that loneliness affects the perception of feeling cared for and being held in high regard. Overall, people’s perception that they are cared for by their partner and held in high regard by their partner go up with the strength of the ratings of care and regard by their partner. That is, people are generally pretty accurate in judging the care and regard they receive.
