Ohio Republicans went three for three on the Ohio Supreme Court for the second consecutive cycle, giving them a 6-1 majority.
Fromer Ohio Solicitor General Benjamin Flowers addresses the Ohio Supreme Court in a case about Ohio's fetal "heartbeat" abortion law. COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the second cycle in a row, Republicans swept the slate of races for Ohio’s Supreme Court on Tuesday, giving the party 6-1 control over the final stop in the judicial process.
While any number of cases and controversies will reach the new justices, they’re almost certain to participate in the court’s first decisions about the new, constitutional rights to reproductive freedom in Ohio that passed in 2023. They also may well take up future redistricting cases, even though voters rejected proposed reforms in Issue 1.
Soon after the three spoke, the Ohio Right to Life, Ohio’s most prominent anti-abortion lobby group and backer of all three, issued a statement of congratulations. “Every time I have visited a city or a town, I’ll never forget how much the citizens of Ohio have supported me,” he said. “I’ve always taken the laws of our democracy as the law. I’m proud of the opinions that I wrote. I wrote about 30 dissents in my six years and authored four academic papers on criminal justice reform.”
Despite a hospital stay, medically induced coma and an infection, the justices ruled the man should have known about the chance of bones in a “boneless” wing, and, therefore, he couldn’t bring his lawsuit to a trial, an outcome the Democrats cast as absurd and unfair for consumers. They also played up their backing by pro-choice organizations and the anti-abortion support for the three Republicans.
