The House is poised to reopen with a new speaker, after Republicans trudged through three doomed nominations in three weeks,
WASHINGTON — House Republicans were brimming with optimism Wednesday as they sought to put three weeks of bitter infighting behind them and elect a new speaker. In contrast to three previous GOP nominees since the House came to a standstill Oct. 3, no major internal opposition had emerged to Johnson.
Johnson grew up in Shreveport and got his college and law degrees at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He’s a relative newcomer, serving only his fourth two-year term. The next speaker will confront a host of thorny issues that have been piling up, from the Middle East conflict to government spending. And he will remain under threat of removal by the same mechanism that a small group of dissidents used to oust Kevin McCarthy of California 22 days ago.
Johnson won the Republican nomination on the third and final round of Tuesday night’s votes, collecting 128 votes to the 29 for runner-up Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida. But there were 44 write-ins, all but one for McCarthy. That initially appeared to be a warning sign of yet another failed nomination. But an ensuing roll call vote identified no apparent holdouts.
They’ve pounced on Johnson’s role in crafting Republican arguments aimed at undermining the legitimacy of President Joe Biden’s election and what they described as extreme conservative positions. The GOP conference tried first to replace McCarthy with the No. 2, Majority Leader Steve Scalise. He defeated Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio for the first nomination. Jordan loyalists refused to fall in line andHe later called Johnson “the consensus conservative who can lead our entire conference.
