Republican Andrew Rice secured more than 60 percent of the vote in the election for House District 98, in unofficial results
As of 1am, Andrew Rice had secured 62.46 percent of the vote in the election for House District 98 compared toCheryl Smith's 37.5 percent with more than 11,000 votes counted. When an election was last held for the seat in 2025, Republican Barry Knight secured 56.
6 percent of the vote to Smith's 43.2 percent. The seat became vacant after Knight died last month, leading to a special election to cover the last two years of his term. Although the seat has long been held by a Republican, the overperformance bucks a recent trend of Democrats flipping GOP-held seats during President Donald Trump's second term. Democrats hold a majority in the House of Delegates so a GOP candidate retaining a seat helps it challenge the ruling party and limit its ability to pass key legislation. The Democrats previously picked up 13 seats in the House in the November 2025 elections so this result could signal a Republican shift. Speaking to reporters after the election was called, Rice said:"I’m so thankful for their support and I can’t wait to get to work for them in Richmond.", ours is different: The Courageous Center—it's not"both sides," it's sharp, challenging and alive with ideas.
