Maryland’s GOP has struggled to find its footing in a post-Hogan landscape, and the District represents the party’s best shot for reclaiming a U.S. House seat.

Aside from Cox, there are five contenders in the Republican field: former state delegate Neil Parrott, who won his party’s nomination for the seat in the two previous primaries; Tom Royals, a political newcomer and former Naval fighter pilot; Air Force veteran Mariela Roca, who competed in the district’s 2022 primary; former state trooper Chris Hyser and former state delegate Brenda J. Thiam.
Whoever emerges victorious will need resources to help reclaim the seat. The state GOP hopes to flip the 6th District alongside an open U.S. Senate seat Trone is now seeking — victories that would bring the number of Republicans in Maryland’s 10-member congressional delegation to three. “Rebuilding is a process and we’re making some exciting internal progress,” she said, “while also building for the 2024 General Election cycle that is almost here.”
