A new Gallup poll reveals that Republicans maintain a slim lead in political party affiliation for the third year running. The poll also underscores significant shifts in Republican identification among various demographic groups.

Republicans have maintained a slight advantage in political party affiliation for the third year in a row, according to a new Gallup poll. The survey found that 46% of Americans identify as Republicans or lean towards the Republican Party, while 45% identify as Democrats or lean towards the Democratic Party. This narrow margin represents a continuation of a trend observed in recent years.

The poll also highlights significant shifts in Republican identification and leaning within specific demographic groups. Notably, Hispanic Americans, young adults, lower-income Americans, individuals without a college degree, Catholics, and African Americans have all shown substantial increases in their affiliation with the Republican Party since 2021. Conversely, groups like college graduates, adults aged 65 and older, non-Hispanic White people, married individuals, upper-income and middle-income Americans, political liberals, and nonreligious Americans have experienced minimal or no changes in their Republican affiliation.Gallup gathered data for this poll from a combination of 2024 Gallup telephone surveys, conducting over 14,000 interviews with American citizens. Participants were asked to identify their political affiliation as Republican, Democrat, or independent. Independents were then further questioned about their political leanings, whether towards the Republican or Democratic Party.
