Blue states' immigration policies came under intense scrutiny in Congress Tuesday.

defending their choices to limit cooperation with the federal government. House Republicans confronted so-called sanctuary state governors including Illinois' J.B. Pritzker, New York's Kathy Hochul, and Minnesota's Tim Walz over their states' immigration policies. "You're calling ICE agents modern day Nazis. Given the attacks that took place on ICE agents in Los Angeles over the weekend, don't you regard your dangerous, inflammatory rhetoric as a problem?" Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., asked Walz during the hearing. "It saddens me that you refuse to express regret," Emmer continued. Republicans took turns citing immigrant-related crimes in the states, arguing the governors didn't do enough to prevent them from happening. "He found a sleeping woman on the subway, lit her on fire, and burnt her alive. This is in Kathy Hochul's New York, and as I'm sure you are aware, and I'll remind you, ICE issued an order to detain this violent criminal but that was rejected by New York officials due to sanctuary state laws," Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., said during the hearing."Because of your sanctuary state policies," Stefanik shot back.turned violent over the weekend. The governors defended their state policies while criticizing the Trump administration's decision to send military backup to California despite state leaders' objections. "Enforcing immigration law is not the role of local and state governments... it's the federal government's job to secure the border," Walz said during his opening statement of the hearing. The Trump Administration has repeatedly defended its decision to send thousands of National Guard troops and 700 marines to California. The National Guard has so-far protected some federal buildings in Los Angeles and accompanied ICE on immigration raids in the area. The Marines were still training for crowd control but were set to be deployed to the city by the end of the week. The Trump administration has suggested troops could also be deployed to other cities. "It's wrong to deploy the National Guard and active duty Marines into an American city over the objection of local law enforcement just to inflame a crisis," Pritzker said Tuesday. Earlier this year, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration's attempt at withholding federal funds from sanctuary cities and counties. A similar effort was also blocked during the President's first term.
