Multiple Republican lawmakers are expressing opposition to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a budget reconciliation bill directed by President Donald Trump.

Multiple Republican lawmakers are expressing opposition to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a budget reconciliation bill directed by President Donald Trump. Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, Ron Johnson, R-W.Va.

, and Jerry Moran, R-Kan., along with Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and Scott Perry, R-Pa., have all voiced concern about the bill, which the White House has promoted as the “most essential piece of legislation” in the West. Sen. Lee, replying to a post on social media platform X by Elon Musk, the former Department of Government Efficiency head who has decried the bill, the legislation’s projected expansion of the federal government’s budget deficit is “nothing short of stunning.” The senator claimed Congress has “hollowed out” the middle class through reckless deficit spending and inflation the body causes. “The Uniparty propels this vicious cycle, and must be stopped in its tracks,” Sen. Lee added, referring to the idea of Republicans and Democrats working together against the public interest. No Democrat in the House of Representatives voted for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., predicted would create more jobs, raise wages and promote labor participation. The bill doesn’t address the budget deficit’s long-term trajectory though, according to Sen. Johnson. He said in an“The trajectory of deficits is up, and no matter what the 'Big Beautiful Bill’ does, it does not address that long-term prospect. It does not bend the deficit curve down. It supports it going up,” Sen. Johnson explained. Russell Vought, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, disagrees. He claimed in a CNN interview on Sunday the bill would shrink the deficit by $1.4 trillion over 10 years. “It's $1.6 trillion in mandatory savings,” Vought said, referencing a potential extension of tax cuts approved by Trump during his first term. “Obviously, we have a little bit of spending in there as well for border and defense. But that is the biggest mandatory savings package that we have seen since the . It's very historic.” Vought, who was provided a clip of Musk expressing opposition to the bill, disagreed with the businessman’s take that the legislation increases the deficit and undermines DOGE. Rep. Perry, on the other hand,“I wish I had a nickel for every time the @freedomcaucus sounded the alarm and nobody listened, only to find out the hard way we were right all along,” Rep. Perry wrote, referring to the caucus he used to chair. “We expect MASSIVE improvements from the Senate before it gets back to the House.” Some Republicans have expressed concern over particular elements of the legislation. Sen. Moran reportedly toldhe was worried about “harming” hospitals the government just spent money to save and that there’s sentiment among senators the timeline for phasing out renewable energy tax credits is too fast. A couple of Republicans have pushed back on those concerns, though. Rep. Greene has also pledged to vote against the bill should it return to the House with a provision on a state artificial intelligence regulation ban, which the House Committee on Energy and Commerce promoted as a guardrail against the endangerment of the country’s “technological leadership.”
