Republican officials in Chandler will send the names of Liz Harris, Julie Willoughby and Steven Steele to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.
Supporters of ousted state Rep. Liz Harris protest outside a Chandler event center on April 17, 2023, where GOP precinct committee members from Legislative District 13 had gathered to choose three candidates to replace Harris.Less than a week after she was expelled from the Arizona Legislature, former Rep.
Harris told The Arizona Republic before Monday's meeting started that she didn't think her peers in the Legislature had treated her fairly. She gave her speech to the gathered committee members and proxy voters while reporters were briefly barred from the meeting, reading from a supporter's email, according to attendees.
Jeff DeWit, chair of the state Republican Party, told The Republic before the meeting began that the law didn't allow the state party to"put its thumb on the scale" by suggesting nominees. Whether the vote would calm Harris supporters who feel she wasn't treated fairly depends on who ends up replacing her, DeWit said.
The expulsion and replacement process is another stark division point between more traditional Republicans and those who have focused on election conspiracy theories. Harris' expulsion represented the first time Republican lawmakers took any disciplinary action against a lawmaker for pushing an outlandish election conspiracy.
They said the unfounded claims of bribery of a host of elected officials, including the Republican House speaker, needed further investigation. Those claims originated from divorce and child custody proceedings of a man who was seeking to implicate his ex-wife and former mother-in-law; two judges had previously called them"delusional."
