The Republican National Committee has approved a rule change allowing for a convention during a midterm election year. The potential timing and location of the convention, possibly near the July 4th celebrations and potentially in Washington D.C., raises concerns about the entanglement of partisan politics with the nation's 250th-anniversary events. The event could potentially draw on military parades and the National Mall as backdrops.
Add in a military parade and use the National Mall as a backdrop, and this is what the convention could look like. For those involved in event logistics, transportation, housing, and security, this summer is going to be exceptionally difficult, particularly on the East Coast.
There are two big clusters of high-profile happenings. The first is the soccer, running from June 11 to July 19, with venues in Boston, New York and New Jersey, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Miami. And the second is the celebration of the, including events well before and long after the climax on July 4 in Washington with a “Salute to America 250,” featuring the kind of fireworks and military parades the current president of the United States And now, that same president’s political party looks poised to toss another major event into the summer stew, as PoliticoThe Republican National Committee approved a rule change during its winter meeting on Friday that would allow the party to hold a convention during a midterm election year …The RNC hasn’t chosen an exact time or place for this midterm convention, the first ever for Republicans and the first for either party since Democrats. It’s assumed it will take place during the summer, giving them time to develop and then deploy a midterm message. And since the driving force behind this event and its certain dominant personage is Donald Trump, the odds are extremely high the GOP will do everything possible to insinuate its partisan clambake into the allegedly nonpartisan 250th-anniversary events. So in Washington or in swing-state Pennsylvania sometime very near July 4 is a good bet. A D.C. venue would be especially convenient, since Trump has lots of power over the District and a large cadre of National Guard troops already at his beck and call. And the possibilities for self-aggrandizement are limitless, as are opportunities to establish absolute identification of the nation and its “greatness” with the GOP. Perhaps the president could ride down Pennsylvania Avenue on the back of an elephant followed by the aforementioned military parade with the city’s many Democrats looking on, glum and defeated. No scenarios seem too excessive, particularly since Trump is going to have to share the stage during the next regular Republican National Convention with his putative successor. It’s anthat the only way Republicans can win the midterms is if the boss is perceived as being on the ballot. A Trumpy midterm convention, perhaps the crowning MAGA rally of them all, would fill the bill.to convince Republicans to hold the midterm convention in Las Vegas. But while Sin City might offer the requisite glitz and lots of entertainment for delegates, it’s hard to see how Vegas can compete with a full-on partisan takeover of Washington symbolizing Republican power, particularly if a military parade and fireworks on the National Mall are on offer. Co-opting a national patriotic celebration is incredibly on brand for Trump, even though he’s been behaving lately more like King George III than any of the revolutionary Founding Fathers. So if I were in Las Vegas placing bets on where the midterm convention would be held, my money would be on Washington, particularly if Trump’s architects and engineers can make theBenjamin Hart Meteorologist John Homenuk says the difference between a major storm and something even bigger comes down to the sleet line. The Border Patrol chief said Liam Ramos has been housed with his dad in a Texas detention facility and “I don’t think it gets any better than that.”The city is hunkering down as forecasts are predicting that New Yorkers could see six or more inches of snow over the weekend. The new mayor is making the TV-news rounds and mobilizing city agencies as he prepares for the first major snowstorm of his tenure. The VP took no concrete steps to “turn down the temperature,” and he laughed at ICE protesters, saying they just love “sex-offender criminal aliens.”An armed robbery at the new Poké Court is the latest sign of a collectors’ market that’s gone off the rails. In a series of tirades on Truth Social, the unpopular president expressed his rage at an ungrateful public by lashing out at pollsters.New polling shows once again that the young and non-white voters that helped Trump return to power are as unhappy with him as they were with Biden.More than 50 nations were invited to Trump’s MAGA-fied U.N.
