Republican state lawmakers have struck a deal on proposals to remove undocumented migrants from the country and pump more than a billion dollars into building a border wall , setting the stage for the biggest ever expansion of Texas ’ immigration enforcement powers. Lawmakers filed identical legislation in the House and Senate this week just hours into the Texas Legislature’s fourth special session of the year, and both measures received an immediate stamp of approval from Lt. Gov.
Texas House OKs bill allowing police to deport undocumented migrants In a post on social media Tuesday, Patrick praised the lead negotiators in both chambers for “producing the strongest border security bill in the country.” The removal bill would empower police to arrest people they suspect of unlawfully entering Texas from Mexico, creating a new class of “illegal entry” state crimes. Up to this point, Senate GOP lawmakers had pushed for attempting to jail every person arrested.
