Republican Ashley Williams defeated incumbent Democrat Greg McCaffrey in the race to serve as Livingston County district attorney Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024. Most incumbent candidates in the Rochester area won reelection Tuesday, but the race for Livingston County district attorney saw an upset.
Incumbent Greg McCaffrey, a Democrat who has held the seat since 2012, lost his bid for reelection to Republican challenger Ashley Williams by 1,378 votes. Then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed McCaffrey to the vacant seat in May 2012 after Tom Moran was elected to serve as a New York State Supreme Court judge. McCaffrey was elected to a full term later in 2012, and won reelection in 2016 and 2020.Williams, 37, has worked as an attorney for the Livingston County Department of Social Services since 2020. She previously served as an assistant district attorney for the county.
“We need a change in leadership to ensure that criminals are prosecuted effectively and that Livingston County is as safe as possible for our children, senior citizens, families and all residents.” As a Republican, I oppose bad policies that some liberal Democrats have pushed forward, like Bail Reform and Defunding the Police. As District Attorney, I’ll utilize the bully pulpit of the Office to stand up and make our community’s opposition to these policies known to lawmakers in Albany and Washington. We need more rights for victims, not criminals.
