A Republican candidate for Congress in Oklahoma , Jackson Lahmeyer , has dropped out of the race after President Donald Trump snatched back his endorsement in the aftermath of a cheating scandal .

Lahmeyer, a 34-year-old MAGA pastor, announced his decision to suspend his campaign for the House seat in Oklahoma's 1st Congressional District after prayerful consideration with his wife and team. He cited his desire not to be a distraction to his family, church, and the people of Oklahoma's 1st Congressional District.

Lahmeyer's campaign was rocked by scandal over the weekend when the Daily Mail published his texts to Caitlin Simmons Key, a 40-year-old former pageant queen who worked as a fundraiser for his campaign. The scandal involved Lahmeyer sending flirtatious texts to Key, which were later exposed by the Daily Mail. Lahmeyer later came clean to his wife, Kendra, with whom he shares five children, and apologized for crossing a boundary line through text messaging.

He claimed that the story was paid for and that the communications were carefully cherry-picked to create an impression that is not accurate. Trump took back his endorsement of Lahmeyer on Wednesday, just minutes before the candidate dropped out, and instead endorsed Mark Tedford, a fellow Republican candidate, for the Congressional seat. Trump praised Tedford as a strong conservative voice who will never let the people of Oklahoma's 1st Congressional District down
