Reports: Incarnate Word coach G.J. Kinne set to be hired by Texas State

UIW Head Football Coach G.J. Kinne along with UIW Athletic Director Richard Duran watch during thier selection show watch party late Sunday morning on the campus. The Cardinals drew a first round bye.Texas State is hiring Incarnate Word coach G.J. Kinne to take the reins of the Bobcats football program, according to multiple reports Thursday.

As reports began to circulate this week about his candidacy at both Texas State and his alma mater, Tulsa, Kinne said Tuesday that he was working to limit distractions for UIW and keep the focus on the playoffs, though he stopped short of committing to finishing the season with the Cardinals. Coupled with the arrival of transfer quarterback Lindsey Scott, Kinne helped the high-flying Cardinals’ offense become even more potent.

Following a five-year playing career across the NFL, CFL and Arena Football League that included signing with the defunct San Antonio Talons in 2013, Kinne entered the coaching ranks in 2017 as a graduate assistant at SMU. He also spent the 2018 season as an offensive analyst with Arkansas and worked on offensive special projects with the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles in 2019.
