Immigrant advocates say federal immigration agents have increased their presence across parts of Suffolk County in recent days, with sightings reported nearly every day for the past week in Brentwood and Central Islip.
According to advocates, photos and videos show Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents operating in multiple locations Tuesday morning, including the parking lot of a Central Islip Fire Department facility. Additional sightings were reported at the Target store in Central Islip, as well as other areas throughout the community. Advocates also say ICE agents were seen at an immigration services facility in Hauppauge where individuals attend scheduled appointments. The latest concerns follow a similar controversy over the summer, when ICE agents were spotted in the parking lot of a Brentwood firehouse. Activists say the repeated use of fire department properties for federal operations is troubling and undermines trust in local emergency services. ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the latest reports. The Central Islip Fire Department was also contacted for information and comment, but has not yet responded.
