Chronicle reporter Sarah Smith details her experience writing about a Houston nurse's...
During her nights of insomnia, Christine Coglaiti takes notes from lectures and other videos she finds online about long-term COVID. Being a former ER nurse, she feels she has enough medical knowledge and experience to be helpful in finding the reason and cure for those who also suffer. My younger sister’s life fell apart when she was in high school, but none of us knew it at the time. She was sick, but we thought she would get better.
Christine likes to say, because she’s from Louisiana, she believes some sort of voodoo or kismet brought us together. Because I’m a cultural Jew, I don’t believe in much of anything divine or supernatural. But, naively or not, I do believe in the power of storytelling to change minds, to evoke empathy, to transport people into worlds they’ve never experienced.I first met Christine in January. During the five months we worked together, Christine let me into every facet of her life.
My family still grieves the life my sister should have had. I can’t begin to imagine how she feels. Christine, who loved making snap decisions in an emergency room and had a photographic memory, still grieves the life she used to have. That’s what people miss about long COVID: It’s not just about the physical symptoms. It’s about loss, about what was and what should have been. I grieve for my sister; I grieve for Christine. But neither of them wants or needs anyone’s pity.
