REPORT: Wayne Barnes to referee Springboks v All Blacks RWC final

Englishman Wayne Barnes is set to be named as the referee for the 2023 Rugby World Cup final between the Springboks and All Blacks next weekend., Wayne Barnes — the most experienced referee in the history of Test rugby — will take charge of the Webb Ellis title-deciding clash between South Africa and New Zealand at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, Paris on Saturday evening.

Another Englishman, Tom Foley, is believed to have been selected as the Television Match Official for the final, while a decision on the sideline assistant referees will be made later in the week.The report also states at South African Jaco Peyper is being monitored by World Rugby and if he recovers in time, he’ll be the man in the middle in the third-place playoff between England and Argentina on Friday night at the same venue.

Peyper suffered a calf injury early on in the Rugby World Cup quarter-final between Wales and Argentina last weekend. He limped gingerly to the touchline to be examined by doctors and eventually had to be replaced as referee by England’s Karl Dickson.
