Texas and Oklahoma have together explored ways of departing the Big 12 earlier than the announced July 1, 2025 date ever since the Houston Chronicle’s Brent Zwerneman broke the story about those two conference flagship programs engaging in talks with the SEC back in July 2021.
Texas’ and Oklahoma’s grant of rights deals with FOX and ESPN run through June 30, 2025, after which both programs can become full-fledged members of the SEC without having to jump through any logistical or financial hoops. According to Thamel, the most likely scenario after discussions fell apart this week is for UT and OU to remain Big 12 members through the end of their current media contracts.
There’s still a chance these talks could be rekindled in the coming months. But for now, with the Big 12 set to welcome four new members ahead of the Fall 2023 athletic season, it appears Texas and Oklahoma will stick around for another couple years. "In any situation like this, I always look for a win-win scenario," commissioner Brett Yormark said last July during Big 12 media days."That being said, it’s important that whatever happens is in the best interest of this conference.”
