Tesla has fallen far short of its intention to install 1,000 of its specialty solar roofs per week, a goal CEO Elon Musk told investors the company was on track to hit during a 2020 earnings call., according to a new report from consulting firm Wood Mackenzie. The Tesla Solar Roof is a specialty product – different from solar panels – that replaces regular shingles with tempered glass panels able to capture solar energy.SolarCity, founded by two of Musk’s cousins.
“As the residential solar industry continues to grow, solar roofing solutions will play an important role in offering customers flexibility and alternatives to conventional modules,” Max Issokson, lead report author, said in a statement. “The future potential of Tesla’s Solar Roof will rely on the company’s ability to simplify and streamline installations and tap into a broader customer base.”
While Tesla’s Solar Roof is falling short of expectations, overall residential solar installations had a banner year in 2022.over the previous year with close to 6 gigawatts of installation, according to the Solar Energy Industry Association. Tesla has installed a total of 3,000 Solar Roofs since 2016, according to the Wood Mackenzie report, which accounts for nearly 30 megawatts of capacity.
