Lettuce the company supplied to Taco Bell restaurants has been identified as a possible source of contamination.
On Thursday, the Washington Post reported investigators have identified shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by the company to Taco Bell restaurants as a possible source of contamination.has sickened people in 34 states, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
More than 4,000 cases have been reported in Michigan alone.
“The signal we have gotten is that there is a very high percentage of people who got sick at Taco Bell, and when investigators asked what their menu items were in common, lettuce came up frequently,” an individual familiar with the investigation told the Post. Taco Bell told the Food and Drug Administration the lettuce was sourced from Taylor Farms for restaurants in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia, the Post reported.
On its website, Taylor Farms claims to be the leading global producer of salads and healthy fresh foods, with production facilities in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Western Europe. In a statement, Taco Bell said it has “taken immediate action to voluntarily remove potentially impacted lettuce from a supplier in select states.
” “The affected ingredient from our supplier is being indefinitely removed from our supply chain nationwide and will be replaced within 24 hours in select states,” the company said.
