The final report into the 2022 floods has delivered 73 recommendations that the Victorian government will now consider. The report calls for ring levees, better communication, and more resources for the State Emergency Service.
Seventy-three recommendations were made, including a ring levee trial, more resources for the SES , and improved mitigation strategies and warning systems.A northern Victorian farmer says a ring levee saved his home as the final report into the devastating October 2022 floods recommends a trial of them in rural Victoria.He built a ring levee — a perimeter of built-up earth — around his house and sheds in 2011, which protected his property while flooding swept many others away in 2022.
But Mr Schultz said ring levees required people to stay on their properties and that many people tended to leave their homes during floods. "If I put a levee up I may be saving my property, but am I causing more damage to another place?" he said. The government has six months to respond to the inquiry's recommendations but the SES says that's too long to wait.
