Jack Nicklaus awarded $50M in defamation lawsuit against Nicklaus Companies, vindicating his legacy in PGA and LIV Golf disputes.
The 85-year-old Nicklaus filed the suit after the company, owned by billionaire Howard Milstein, allegedly spread false claims suggesting Nicklaus considered a $750 million deal to join the Saudi-financed LIV Golf League.
"It's always hard in a defamation case to prove damages to reputation, because in particular for a guy like Jack, it's always such a good one," Nicklaus' attorney, Eugene Stearns, told ESPN on Monday. "But I think what was important was the dispute that arose 3 1/2 years ago when the company told the world that Jack was selling out the PGA Tour for the Saudi golf, when it was not true. So, we're happy that Jack's been vindicated."The lawsuit also included allegations that Nicklaus was mentally unfit to manage his business affairs. A Florida jury ruled that Nicklaus Companies published false statements damaging the 18-time major champion’s reputation, exposing him to ridicule and mistrust. Nicklaus Companies executive Andrew O’Brien and Milstein were not held personally liable. The victory comes after years of legal disputes, including a prior lawsuit in New York and a noncompete clause that previously restricted Nicklaus from independently designing golf courses.
