The two-row QX65 is expected to launch with a four-cylinder engine in just a few months, and Infiniti already has plans to introduce a sportier engine option.
Infiniti is planning to give its upcoming two-row QX65 SUV a V-6 engine option in its second model year, according to a report by Automotive News. The QX65 is scheduled to join Infiniti's lineup in the coming months for the 2027 model year, with the more potent engine joining the lineup next summer.
The new engine would set the stage for a QX65 Red Sport to be introduced in the future as Infiniti makes a return to performance vehicles. Infiniti is preparing an abrupt about-face in its strategy. We just covered a report that the automaker is planning to revive its Red Sport name with a powerful version of the QX80. Despite the fact that Infiniti still hasn't shown the QX65 in its final production form, a new report from Automotive News suggests that the automaker is planning to add a punchier V-6 to the new SUV shortly after it joins the lineup.The QX65 will join Infiniti's lineup in the coming months as a 2027 model-year vehicle, with the new engine joining in the summer of 2027. At launch, the sloped-roof crossover is expected to be offered exclusively with the same 268-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine found in the QX60 upon which it is based. According to the Automotive News report, the QX65 would then add the same 3.5-liter V-6 found in the Nissan Pathfinder next year. In most Pathfinders, the six-cylinder is rated for 284 horsepower, but that figure is cranked up to 295 ponies in the Rock Creek edition, which tracks with AN's report that Infiniti would tune the engine to around 300 horsepower. The decision would be in line with other plans from the Japanese automaker. In addition to the scheduled QX80 variants, Infiniti is also reviving the Q50 sedan, which it says could be powered by a twin-turbocharged V-6 and offer a manual transmission. The QX60, which the QX65 is based on, could also receive the Pathfinder's V-6, with both variants potential recipients of a Red Sport variant in the future. 'The V-6 is still king in this segment for the perception of power,' a source told Automotive News.
