Donald Trump's request reportedly left staff members 'deeply unsettled,' as “it would be an unethical use of the presidency for private gain.”
President Donald Trump reportedly tried, and failed, to get his Trump Turnberry resort in Scotland to host the British Open, according to The New York Times.
Johnson reportedly “raised the idea” of the course hosting the tournament to Scotland Secretary of State David Mundell, too, despite warnings from his deputy that “it would be an unethical use of the presidency for private gain.” Mundell’s deputy, Lewis Lukens, was reportedly left “deeply unsettled” by the request. Lukens emailed State Department officials about the request, per the report, but was later forced out of his position. Lukens had previously served as the acting ambassador to Britain and as the ambassador to Senegal.
Whether the request officially made its way over to either the British government or the R&A or not, Trump’s desire to get the event to his course clearly didn’t pan out.
