A Giants legend and arguably the greatest postseason pitcher in baseball history is reportedly looking for a new team.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have designated left-handed pitcher Madison Bumgarner for assignment, essentially ending his tenure with the team, according to a report from Arizona Central on Thursday morning.

When a player is designated for assignment, he is removed from the 40-man roster and the team has seven days to either trade him or place him on waivers. If a trade doesn't happen and he's not claimed on waivers, the player can either accept an assignment to the minor leagues or elect free agency. It appears unlikely Bumgarner would accept a move to the minors and remain in the organization.

Bumgarner was 0-3 with a 10.26 ERA in four starts this season, his fourth since signing a five-year contract with the D'Backs before the 2020 season. He still had two years, including 2023, left on his deal and entered the season still owed $37 million. The four-time All-Star is a beloved San Francisco Giants figure after spending the first 11 seasons of his career with the team during its dynasty years. He is considered one of the greatest postseason pitchers in baseball history, highlighted by his iconic MVP performance in the 2014 World Series where he allowed just one run in 21 innings.
