A reunion with Sean Payton.

Smith, 27, reunites with head coach Sean Payton who helped select the UCF product in the third round of the 2018 draft. Smith made 51 appearances during his four seasons in New Orleans under Payton, snagging 112 passes for 1,486 yards and 17 touchdowns.

After battling a groin injury, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound pass-catcher was released from the Saints' injured reserve list on Sept. 26. "He’s one of those players who I think details every aspect of playing that position," Payton said of Smith in 2021,."He’s not afraid to do some of the noisy work, but he’s someone who can stretch the field and he’s in good shape. ... He is smart, he’s versatile and all of those things you don’t take for granted.

Rejoining Payton and ex-Saints quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi , Smith is the fourth WR to be stashed on the club's practice squad, along with Phillip Dorsett, Michael Bandy, and David Sills. The Broncos are carrying five WRs on their 53-man roster: Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, Brandon Johnson, Lil'Jordan Humphrey, and rookie Marvin Mims, who leads the team in receiving yards and the NFL in yards-per-catch .
