The pair representing the famous weapons that helped win the war for Texas...
San Jacinto Battleground State HistoriThe Twin Sisters cannons hold a remarkable place in Texas history, and this summer the San Jacinto Battlefield will honor their contribution to the Texas Revolution with monthly demonstrations of cannon fire.
The Battle of San Jacinto finished the fight for Texas independence from Mexico, and it opened with cannon fire from the Sisters on April 21, 1836, at 4:30 p.m. During the 18-minute skirmish, the Mexican army was decimated, with Texians killing 28 enemy soldiers for every one that they lost. The Sisters were manned by Thomas Pliney Plaster, Ben McCulloch, and 28 other men, who launched six pound solid state cannon balls at the Mexican forces.
Sadly, the Twin Sisters themselves are lost to time, and disappear from the official record after being ordered to the Battle of Galveston in 1863. They may have been used in the Mexican American War, or it’s possible they were buried in quicksand outside Goliad. Nevertheless, cannons remain a potent symbol of Texas history and the bond of friendship with the greater United States thanks to sympathizers in Cincinnati, Ohio donating the artillery to the war effort.
Johnson is part of a 10-person cannon team that involved attending a cannon school here in Texas. She learned how to pack cartridges, make quills for gun powder, and fire the cannons safely. These demonstrations are blank shots. No cannonballs will be actually used. That doesn’t mean the experience isn’t thrilling.
