The Plano Republican is among Congress’s most conservative. The March 1 primary will test if that’s still enough.WASHINGTON — Rep. Van Taylor’s reelection bid has become a referendum on 2020 and its aftermath, with primary rivals saying he’s too liberal because he won’t acknowledge that Joe Biden stole the White House or that the Jan. 6 attack on Congress was no big deal.

The barrage has forced Taylor to defend a rock-solid conservative record — and assertions as factual and incontestable as the observation that crimes were committed on Jan. 6.Such comments offend a certain pro-Trump, riot denialism sensibility, though, and the March 1 primary will be a test of which worldview holds sway with Collin County Republicans.

Collin County Judge Keith Self spoke during a hearing at the Jack Hatchell Administration Building in McKinney on Aug. 4, 2014.Challenger Suzanne Harp, whose website pitches her as “the conservative, pro-Trump, America First candidate,” called it “foolish” to believe that fraud didn’t tip the outcome.

“Courts refused to look at the evidence,” he said. “There were votes changed for Joe Biden. And yes, I do believe that it made a difference in the election.”But he added, “There are people that have real concerns about the way elections are conducted in this country. ... There are irregularities and fraud in every election. You want to investigate that. You want to determine what the problems are. You want to go and fix those to the best of your ability.

Like all but 10 House Republicans, he voted against impeaching Trump for inciting insurrection. He boasts endorsements from Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Right to Life, the NRA and Americans for Prosperity. He has a three-year streak with a 100% rating from Heritage Action.Self and Harp hit him over his vote to create a commission modeled after the bipartisan panel that investigated the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

The tussle between those narratives is playing out in a district just north of Dallas that takes in two-thirds of fast-growing Collin County.
