Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis., told Newsmax Thursday that Democrats need to get on board with a Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., speakership so the House is able to function and provide aid to Israel.

The House was plunged into chaos last week when Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was ousted from the speakership in a historic vote that paralyzed the lower chamber’s ability to conduct business. With no precedent to follow, Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., was named acting speaker until a new one could be chosen. McHenry has taken a limited approach to the role, though he recently said the House would act on assistance for Israel in the absence of a permanent speaker if necessary.

“Steve Scalise is going to make an outstanding speaker of the House,” Van Orden said. “These folks said that Kevin McCarthy wasn't conservative enough and if they think Steve Scalise is not conservative enough, they don't know Steve Scalise.
