For the New York Post, on Sunday, demanded New York Gov. Kathy Hochul do more to protect residents, including stopping a practice of 'releasing repeat offenders .' The Democratic congressman began by addressing New York City’s subway system, which he claimed saw its highest number of homicides in 27 years last year. This, he wrote, contributed to the death of a passenger who was lit on fire last month. “Statistics only tell part of the story,” he wrote.
“No numbers can capture the gruesome act of setting a straphanger on fire and the sheer terror it strikes in the hearts of New Yorkers. “ Rep. Torres continued by invoking the alleged rampage of Ramon Rivera, who is accused of killing three New York City residents in November. Rivera was reportedly released early last year from a 12-month prison sentence. Governing is not about waiting years for more tragedies to happen,” Rep. Torres wrote. “It’s about leadership, which is nowhere to be found in New York state.” “For far too long, the broken system in Albany has chosen gaslighting over governing,” he continued. “The state of New York must retire the practice of releasing repeat offenders who go on to commit violent crimes against innocent New Yorkers. We must re-examine any and all laws that have led to the release of repeat offenders and have impaired the ability of prosecutors to prosecute serious offenders throughout the state.” A representative for Gov. Hochul’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The National News Desk (TNND). Rep. Torres in December also called on Gov. Hochul to close state “loopholes” which allegedly enabled Luigi Mangione to use a “ghost gun” in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. “I am respectfully calling upon you as Governor to include in your executive budget proposal legislation that closes the manufacturing loophole in ghost gun laws and closes the ghost gun loophole in gun manufacturing laws,” Rep.
