Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee is running for Houston mayor, scrambling the race for City Hall's top job
Jackson Lee, a native of Queens, New York, came to Texas after graduating from Yale University and the University of Virginia Law School. Then-Mayor Kathy Whitmire appointed her to a municipal court bench, and she won an at-large seat on City Council in 1990.
Four years later, Jackson Lee defeated former Rep. Craig Washington in a Democratic primary for the 18th Congressional District, taking the seat once held by Reps. Mickey Leland and Barbara Jordan, the first Black woman elected to Congress from the South. In her early days in Congress, Jackson Lee voted against the Defense of Marriage Act, which banned federal recognition of same-sex marriage, and against the Iraq War. More recently, she has sponsored an update to the Violence Against Women Act, helped lead the effort to recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday, and fought to include funds for environmental justice in the Inflation Reduction Act. She serves on the powerful judiciary and budget committees. This is a developing story.
