Rep. Matt Gaetz 'personally apologized' for Twitter smearing Michael Cohen, the ex-lawyer for President Donald Trump. The Florida Republican was accused in a complaint filed by the Democratic Coalition of violating ethics rules with his tweet.

Rep. Matt Gaetz says he"personally apologized" Wednesday for Twitter smearing Michael Cohen — but that didn't stop the Florida Republican from having congressional ethics probe requested for his social media salvo against President Donald Trump's former lawyer and fixer.

Gaetz wrote it the day before Cohen gave damning testimony at the House Oversight and Government Reform committee that painted Trump as a racist con man who had repeatedly broke the law. Because of the timing of the tweet, Gaetz was accused by many people of engaging in witness tampering. Cohen's admitted crimes include campaign finance violations connected to facilitating hush money payments to two women, porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal, at Trump's personal direction to keep them quiet about alleged affairs they had with Trump. Those affairs, which Trump denies occurred, allegedly began shortly after the birth of his son Baron with first lady Melania Trump in 2006.
