An Austin high school senior who has lived in the United States since he was 11 is being held at an immigration detention center after a traffic stop, drawing calls for his release now from U.S. Rep.
Greg Casar. Luis Fernando Cabrera, a senior at Northeast Early College High School in Austin, is being held at the Karnes County Immigration Processing Center in Karnes City, Texas. His family says he was detained following a traffic stop earlier this month involving the Texas Department of Public Safety. Casar, a Democrat who represents the Austin area, criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement and urged Fernando Cabrera's release.
“They're sending students that are trying to graduate to detention centers. And the most that ICE can say about it is that you should leave the country after you've gone to elementary school here, middle school here, and are about to graduate from high school here and go to community college. I mean, give me a break,” Casar said.

” Casar spoke outside Northeast Early College High School on Monday morning, becoming the latest to call for Fernando Cabrera's release after family and community members rallied on his behalf last week.
“These are scary times, and when people choose to speak out, they're not only standing up for their family, but for all of our rights as Americans,” Casar said. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a trooper pulled Fernando Cabrera over the morning of May 1 around 2 a.m. for expired registration.
DPS said that during the stop, the trooper determined the driver was not lawfully present in the United States and contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement for assistance. The Department of Homeland Security said Fernando Cabrera "admitted to having no legal basis or documentation to remain in the U.S." DHS also said Fernando Cabrera will remain in custody "pending immigration proceedings and will receive full due process.
" Fernando Cabrera's attorney, Jim Harrington, said a habeas corpus petition has been filed, allowing detained individuals to challenge their confinement in court. “Hopefully the judge will listen to this, and release him so that we want him back here for graduation,” Harrington said. Harrington also said, “This kid is as close to being an American citizen as possible. ” Fernando Cabrera's family says he worked at Popeyes to support his sister and 2-year-old nephew.
Casar said Fernando Cabrera is expected to attend Austin Community College this fall.
