) - U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures held a town hall Monday night, giving residents a chance to speak directly with their congressman on issues ranging from conflict overseas to costs at home. Nearly 100 people packed the pews at Truevine Missionary Baptist Church in Toulminville to hear the representative for Alabama’s Second Congressional District address concerns weighing on their minds.
“Right now, the political climate is kind of hostile, so, just like the community, I’m looking for answers, maybe guidance on what the next steps should be,” said Tabitha Phillips, an attendee. Figures said the town hall carried extra meaning because it happened close to the community that shaped him. “When you play ball you always dream of, you know, coming back home and playing before your home crowd. And for me, this is the first time I’ve been able to do one of these town halls anywhere close to where I grew up,” Figures said.One of the biggest topics of the night was the growing conflict overseas.Figures also spoke about the partial government shutdown, tariffs, gas prices, and funding he says has been secured for the Africatown redevelopment program. Sandy McQueen, pastor of Truevine Missionary Baptist Church, said the church was honored to open its doors to the community for the conversation. “We’re delighted to host this town hall meeting as you know what’s happening in our congress, city, our state, our world, and its just good to be at a touch level with our congressman,” McQueen said.“I have a daughter who just enlisted and is now active, and so it really touches home to know that is, this is, something we should really be involved in,” McQueen said.“We’re looking forward to seeing him exhibit his word of speaking and just his manner of control in the room and getting everyone interested in the things that he has for our neighborhood,” James said.“Learning more about what his priorities are for the new year and also what his plans is for our communities so that’s a big deal,” James said.Milton woman arrested on felony charges including child pornography, sexual contact with animalRabies case confirmed in Covington CountySamsung adds iPhone-style sharing; Bluesky not happy over AI
