Representative James Comer is launching a congressional hearing to investigate the link between the rising number of work-from-home hours for Social Security Administration (SSA) employees and the agency's reported productivity decline and processing delays. Comer accuses SSA employees of abusing work-from-home privileges, citing data showing they spend less than half their time in the office. He points to the Biden administration's reversal of policies that limited telework, implemented by the Trump administration in response to service delivery issues. Comer criticizes the outgoing SSA commissioner's recent agreement guaranteeing telework hours for thousands of employees until 2029, questioning his motives and the impact on the incoming administration's ability to manage the workforce.
The hearing will focus on the relationship between the rising number of hours that SSA employees are working from home and the delays and decrease in the agency’s productivity.
“This failure to show up runs parallel to failures at SSA to accomplish its mission,” Comer wrote. “SSA is failing to adequately serve the American people, as SSA disability determination processing times on average have increased since fiscal year 2020.”
