workers are continuing to staff airport checkpoints without pay as a shutdown drags on, prompting long lines, growing frustration among travelers and sharp criticism from Rep. Buddy Carter. Carter told The National New Desk he has been at the airport “four times in the last four days” and described widespread anger over the delays and the impact on travelers’ plans. There are about 65,000 TSA employees nationwide, with an average salary between $46,000 and $55,000 a year. Since the shutdown began, more than 400 have quit. TSA agents have been working without pay since mid-February and will continue until a resolution is found. Carter told The National New Desk he has been at the airport “four times in the last four days” and described widespread anger over the delays and the impact on travelers’ plans. “People are upset,” Carter said. “These people on these lines, they're missing funerals. They're missing family events. They're missing important business meetings. And they are upset and rightfully so.” On what he believes is needed to end the shutdown, Carter said, “They need to fund DHS,” adding he would not support an agreement “unless everything is funded, including TSA, including ICE.” Carter called the situation “inexcusable” and said the Department of Homeland Security should be funded immediately, arguing the agency is needed “at a time of conflict in the world with Iran.” “TSA workers have a stressful job as it is, and adding to that stress is unfair to them,” Carter said. “And then for them not to get paid is just ridiculous.” Asked about reports of passengers waiting “3 to 4 hours” at a TSA checkpoint, Carter said travelers “have every right to be upset.” Carter also urged members of Congress to give up their pay during the shutdown and singled out Georgia Sens. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, saying they “ought to be giving up their paycheck.” Carter said TSA workers are “getting a paycheck. It's got a zero on the pay stub.” Carter also weighed in on other issues, including the prospects for passing the Save America Act through reconciliation. “Quite honestly, I'm not sure that we're going to be able to pass the SAVE America Act through reconciliation,” he said, citing concerns about whether it would meet Senate rules.and national security concerns and pointed to legislation he said he sponsored, Sammy’s Law.
