Rep. Jamaal Bowman pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor on Thursday for falsely pulling a fire alarm in the Cannon House Office Building last month. Shortly before the House of Representatives was set to vote on a bill to fund the federal government late last month,, leading the building to evacuate and delaying the vote. Bowman’s critics, including then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy , accused Bowman of intentionally pulling the fire alarm to delay the vote.

According to the terms of the deal read aloud in court, Bowman’s sentencing will be deferred for three months. During that time, Bowman will be on probation, will pay a $1,000 fine and will write an apology letter to the US Capitol Police. A stone-faced Bowman appeared in D.C. Superior Court on Thursday for his arraignment, one day after he was charged. Under an agreement with prosecutors, he will pay a $1,000 fine and write an apology to the Capitol Police.
