Congressman Adam Smith discusses the passage of the 'Big, Beautiful Bill,' his thoughts about Trump’s foreign policy decisions, and the Democratic Party.
represents Washington’s 9th congressional district“Basically, robs from the poor to give to the better off,” Smith said about the bill. “It is the exact opposite of where we should be taking economic policy, and they do all of that, and drive the debt up by $3.
4 trillion. So, it is primarily tax cuts that benefit primarily the wealthy, certainly the upper middle class and above, where it takes money away from the working poor and the working class – which is the exact opposite of what we need to be doing. It cuts access to health care and food for people in the roughly bottom 60% of income earners, and then all these tax cuts on the top end drive up the debt and make it tougher for people to get ahead.” Smith said the bill will make it tougher for those with lower incomes to get health care and access to food, “all to pay for a bunch of tax cuts for people on the high end of our economic spectrum.”When asked about his thoughts on Trump’s foreign policy decisions, Smith said his take, “particularly in Ukraine,” was that the president “showed weakness to Putin” and that “was a huge mistake.” “By criticizing Zelensky, by attacking Ukraine, in some instances there were members of the Trump administration who blamed the war on Ukraine after Russia and Putin had invaded. That basically gave Putin a big green light to continue his attacks,” Smith said. “The only way to stop the war in Ukraine is to convince Putin that he can't take all of Ukraine to force him to the peace table. Force him to negotiate.” Koopmans asked Smith about his thoughts on the Democratic strategy to come up with an answer to regain power in Congress and Washington, D.C. Smith said he viewed it “as a three-step approach.” Smith said he thinks the Trump administration should be called out “for their authoritarian steps,” how the administration’s policies are hurting the United States economically, and that the Democratic party needs to “offer a reasonable alternative.”“You know the public was not satisfied with the way the Democratic party handled border security, crime, homelessness, drugs, economic policy; identity politics,” Smith said. “We have to show that we've learned some things over the last five or six years and we're going to redress the concerns the American people have with Democrats. Just attacking Trump, in my opinion, will not be enough. We have to present a reasonable alternative."
