Bi-directional charging, rolling out en masse for the first time with the Renault 5, could be a game-changer for EV owners
The cost of charging at home is about to get a lot cheaper, in theory. Renault is pioneering a service that promises to cut electricity bills in half if customers agree to not just purchase the firm’s electric car, but also their home power. Meanwhile, UK energy provider Octopus is now offering a new electricity tariff with the hook that customers can essentially charge their electric car for free at home.
“Most relevant is that we need to guarantee to the customer a saving on the bill,” Gianluca de Ficchy, CEO of Mobilize, told Autocar. Or it could avoid a subscription by holding back some of the savings for itself. “We will, with our partner, buy electricity at the best moment and sell it at the best moment. And thanks to the spread we generate the value,” said Ziad Dagher, Mobilize team leader for smart energy.
