Remote-controlled geysers and 'incentives' – Cape Town's bid to cut a load shedding stage
Load shedding is already less severe in Cape Town than in other parts of the country, thanks to Steenbras Hydro Pumped Storage Scheme. This relies on residents signing up to have their electrical equipment, like geysers, shut off via remote control during periods of peak demand.
"The Eskom situation is so precarious that a combination of interventions will be key over the next decade as work continues to reduce our reliance on Eskom,""Smaller energy consumers can make a big difference to keep the lights on for longer in Cape Town and to ensure that the Cape Town economy is enhanced and protected as much as possible."
These aggregators will be working on behalf of the City and will actively enlist – and be responsible for rewarding – residents who save power. Enlisted residents, or Cape Town Power Heroes, will agree to have their non-essential electrical equipment turned off, by these aggregators, during periods of high demand and load shedding.
